Dear Jack,
You’re great. Really you are, you probably don’t get a lot of credit because you never do anything long enough for people to realize your worth, but i mean it - you’re great.
But, this whole ‘of all trades’ thing you got going on just isn’t working out for you. I’m glad you can change light bulbs, navigate an excel spreadsheet, fix the squeaky door, come up with big ideas, and write on a blog. Hell, I’ve heard you can even do cool stuff like graphic design, fix cars, and take pictures. All those things are awesome, but what are you great at? What do you excel at? What things do you do that make you say to yourself you could do this for the rest of your life?
I’m not coming down on you, but have you ever heard of anyone being really successful by being just ok? Besides anyone on The Real World, no one really comes to mind. I know the first thing you’ll think about when I say successful is in regards to money, but I mean successful in the largest sense of the word.
Meyers, Briggs and whoever else might have told you and all of you ENFP friends that you would be naturally inclined to do this, but as a friend- it’s just not becoming anymore. What do you really bring into a job in the real world that is worth paying you to become a specialist at?
Come on the Renaissance is over. We’re not pioneers living off the land anymore. This is not a total self sufficiency type world anymore. It’s a world where you find a niche and become the best you can be within that niche. Get great at something so you can work with people and fit into a team.
I know you’re going to be all defensive and stand-offish, but I only say this because it’s for your own best interest. When it comes to selling your self, passion sells, and it’s tough to be passionate about all of the plates you are trying to spin at the same time. I promise focus is going to be better for you and everyone else in the long run.
Like I said, I still think you’re great. I don’t ever want you to be untrue to yourself, but please please please lose of the ‘of all trades’ thing.
Jack the specialist has a ring to it too right?
